What is Morton’s Neuroma?
While sometimes called a nerve tumor, Morton’s Neuroma is benign and results from irritation, trauma or excessive pressure on the nerve in the foot, which can cause radiating or burning pain to the toes involved.

What Causes Morton’s Neuroma?
The exact cause is not fully known, but Morton’s Neuroma usually develops from nerve entrapment. Compression of the nerve in the web space (the area between toes) leads to swelling, abnormal tissue growth and irritation.
Possible contributing factors include:
- Narrow or tight shoes that compress the toes
- High-heeled shoes, which place the foot in a “push-off” position
- Repetitive trauma or pressure on the forefoot
Morton’s Neuroma Symptoms
Morton’s Neuroma symptoms often include:
- Burning or sharp pain in the ball of the foot, sometimes radiating into the toes
- Numbness or tingling in the affected toes
- Sensation of a pebble or marble under the forefoot
- Pain aggravated by walking, running, wearing tight shoes, or going barefoot
Symptoms most commonly occur between the third and fourth toes but can occasionally affect the second and third toes.
How Is Morton’s Neuroma Treated?
Most patients achieve relief without surgery using one or more of the following:
- Changes in footwear
- Orthotics
- Injections
- Anti-inflammatory medications
If the non-surgical treatments do not prove to help, your orthopedic specialist might recommend surgery to remove the inflamed nerve tissue.
