OrthoNebraska Performs First Endoscopic Spine Procedure in the State

OMAHA, Neb. – OrthoNebraska just performed Nebraska’s first-ever endoscopic spine procedure, giving patients a faster, less invasive option for back pain treatment.

The endoscopic spine procedure, developed by Arthrex, a global leader in minimally invasive surgical technology, uses specialized tools, including a narrow endoscope which is about the size of a pencil tip, to access the spine through a small incision. Unlike traditional open spine surgery, this ultra-minimally invasive technique minimizes disruption to the surrounding muscles and soft tissue, which can eliminate the need to remove bone and significantly reduce recovery time.

“My goal is always to perform the most minimally invasive surgery possible for patients,” said Dr. Matthew Miller. “Endoscopic spine surgery enables the next level of minimally invasive spine surgery. The technology allows us to make an incision smaller than a centimeter, essentially eliminating the need for muscle and soft tissue dissection. There is less bone removal needed with this technology. These two components lead to decreased postoperative pain and speed up recovery.”

Patients can also see Dr. Noah Porter for the endoscopic spine approach, joining Dr. Miller in offering this minimally invasive option at OrthoNebraska.

The procedure can often be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing some patients to return home the same day. Research shows most patients return to work in less than two weeks and 75% of patients experience significantly reduced pain even five years after surgery. Endoscopic spine procedures offer longer-lasting relief than some non-surgical alternatives like radiofrequency ablation.

OrthoNebraska is committed to offering best-in-class, evidence-based treatment options tailored to each individual’s goals and lifestyle. By investing in technologies and techniques that reduce surgical impact and improve outcomes, OrthoNebraska continues to lead the region in orthopedic innovation.
