What Is Shoulder Arthritis?
Shoulder arthritis occurs when areas of the shoulder joint become inflamed, leading to the breakdown of cartilage, the smooth tissue that allows the bones to move easily against one another.
As this cartilage wears away, bones begin to rub together, causing pain and stiffness. Simple daily tasks such as brushing your hair, reaching overhead or fastening a seatbelt can become increasingly difficult.

The most common symptom of shoulder arthritis is pain, which may worsen with activity or at night. Other common symptoms include:
- Stiffness and limited range of motion
- Grinding, clicking, or popping sounds
- Swelling around the joint
- Pain when reaching overhead or behind the back
Shoulder Arthritis Treatment
There are several different types of arthritis that can affect the shoulder, each with unique causes and characteristics. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy and avascular necrosis may all be treated differently, but most cases of shoulder arthritis can be effectively managed with nonsurgical treatment.
Nonsurgical Treatments for Shoulder Arthritis
- Rest and activity modification: Avoid repetitive overhead movements or heavy lifting.
- Physical therapy: Helps maintain flexibility and strengthen shoulder-supporting muscles.
- Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs): Reduce pain and swelling.
- Moist heat or ice: Heat can relax tight muscles; ice reduces inflammation after activity.
- Injections: Corticosteroid injections may provide temporary pain relief.
- Dietary supplements: Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are sometimes used to help relieve joint discomfort (consult your physician before use).

If conservative treatments don’t work, surgery may be an option. The type of surgery depends on the severity and cause of the arthritis, from minimally invasive arthroscopy (shoulder scope) to arthroplasty, or shoulder replacement.
