Pinpoint Your Foot and Ankle Pain

What May Be Causing Your Foot or Ankle Pain?

The foot and ankle are complicated structures and there are many conditions that cause pain and other symptoms. While an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan from a foot and ankle specialist is the best way to get back to what you love, below is an overview of many of the more common foot and ankle conditions and where the pain for those conditions typically originates. Depending on your specific symptoms, this is intended to give you a general idea of what your diagnosis might be, but we advise against starting treatment before seeing a medical professional.

Bottom Foot and Heel Pain

Diagram of Pain Locations on Heel and Bottom of Foot
Heel Spurs or Bursitis
Most episodes of heel pain are related to either Plantar Fasciitis or Achilles Tendinosis.  Rarely do bone spurs develop to the pain of causing pain, but they can be strongly related to either of the above diagnoses.  More

Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia ligament goes through a degenerative change because of too much repetitive stress. This can cause a scarring process within the tissue and results in it thickening and becoming painful. More

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
Tarsal tunnel syndrome can happen when a nerve gets pinched underneath the inner ankle, and typically causes shooting or burning heel and foot arch pain, tingling and numbness.

Gout
Build-up of uric acid crystals in the big toe joint or other joints causes very intense toe pain, swelling and redness. Gout symptoms typically develop suddenly at night and last for a few weeks. More

Turf Toe
Turf Toe is common injury in athletics caused by a sprain of the big toe from it bending back too far. This can cause strain to the joint capsule and associated pain with motion. More

Achilles Tendinitis
The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body. When it becomes irritated and inflamed from overuse or wear and tear as we age, it can get painful and stiff. More

Os Trigonum
This is a small additional bone found in the back of the ankle of 5-10% of people that causes tenderness and pain, particularly among very active people. More

Tarsal Coalition
Tarsal Coalition is where a bony bridge forms between the heel bone and one of the tarsal bones. Causes foot and ankle pain and stiffness that is worse when you are on your feet, muscle spasms and flat feet. Typically affects children aged 10-15. More

Bunions & Bunionettes
These occur when one of the toes starts to deviate inwards causing the base of the toe (like the knuckle) to stick outwards. This is known as a bunion for the big toe and a bunionette for the little toe. More

Plantar Fibromatosis
A plantar fibromatosis is a non-cancerous growth in the arch of the foot that feels hard like a pebble or marble. It typically results in pain and tightness on the bottom of the foot.

Morton’s Neuroma
This condition feels like you have a small stone in your shoe between two toes. It results in sharp, stabbing pain in the ball of the foot as well as tingling and numbness in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th toes. More

Front Foot and Ankle Pain

Sinus Tarsi Syndrome
Sinus Tarsi Syndrome is often the cause of ongoing foot pain following an ankle sprain or twisting of the ankle.

Extensor Tendonitis
The most common cause of top-of-foot pain, this condition is typically characterized by pain when the toes are lifted up and swelling on the top of the foot.

Claw Toe, Mallet Toe, or Hammer Toe
A condition where muscle tightness or weakness can make the toes out of balance.  This can then lead to toe deformity.

Gout
Build-up of uric acid crystals in the big toe joint causes very intense toe pain, swelling and redness. Gout symptoms typically develop suddenly at night and last for a few weeks. More

Tibialis Anterior Tendonitis
Irritation of the tendon across the top of the ankle can causes pain when walking on stairs or inclines.  But even more common is for this to ache mostly at night when the ankle is in a relaxed position.

Ankle Sprain
The tearing of a ligament can lead to ankle pain and instability. 85% of ankle injuries are ligament sprains. More

Posterior Tibial Tendonitis
This condition is when the tendon along the inner ankle becomes inflamed or torn, making it difficult to stand on tiptoes and causes pain and swelling.  This is the tendon that help hold up your arch, so this is much more common in flat feet. More

Stress Fractures
Caused by repetitive overuse, this is common in runners and running sports. More

Bunions & Bunionettes
These occur when one of the toes starts to deviate inwards causing the base of the toe (like the knuckle) to stick outwards. This is known as a bunion for the big toe and a bunionette for the little toe. More
